Brown has the size and physical tools needed to develop into a future high carry, load-back, at least at the mid-major level. Has a longer frame and looks a bit taller than his listed measurables. While you wish he were a bit more compact he has a strong well-defined body and plenty of room for added size to assist his projected downhill college running style. He hits the hole fast and can quickly reach top speed; does lack good top-end and an explosive extra gear. Can see and hit the cutback. Not an effective pick and slide zone back but we like him as a potential one cut and go slasher. Good initial north-south momentum through the hole coupled with his solid size makes him difficult to arm tackle through the second level for smaller defensive backs. While he shows he can stretch it laterally with adequate outside quicks he could struggle bouncing outside versus faster pursuing lateral defenders at the next level. Tends to run high laterally and loses speed and power. Much more effective squaring up out of his downhill cuts and getting north. Does need to watch his running leverage and run more behind his pads. Lacks a low base and opens up his body for a lot of big hits and limits power. That said, when he does put his complete game together he certainly looks like a legit D-I running back prospect with the strength to carry the load, earn productive yards after contact and potentially wear down a defense. An every down guy who can run, block and effectively catch the football out of the backfield. Continued physical upside and college coaching on running leverage and aiming points should allow him to flourish.

Talk about it in Football Recruiting Board
Houston picked up a big verbal commitment today from one of the top backs in the Lone Star State in the Class of 2010. Xavier Brown committed to the Cougars over Arizona, Texas A&M and others.

"I am committed to Houston," Brown said.

"I like the plan they have and they are recruiting some great players. It's a real good coaching staff, and they run a similar offense to what we do."

Brown said the pick might surprise some people nationally, but locally he knows that UofH is building a powerhouse program.

"Everybody is behind me and all for it," he said. "This worked out great because I wanted to commit early and concentrate on my senior year."

Brown, 6-0 and 195 pounds is from Pearland (Texas) Dawson High School. Houston was his first offer as teams like Texas A&M and Arizona were showing him strong interest.

"I am a speed back and a north-south guy," he said. "I beat defense with my speed but I can lay the wood when I want to."

Brown is widely considered one of the top running backs in the Lone Star State for the Class of 2010.
